Holland Lake and Falls

So if you’re looking for fantastic lake and waterfall adventures in Montana, the list is virtually endless. Easily accessible and family friendly choices may limit the options a little, but not much. One that fits both categories of family friendly and not difficult is Holland Lake and Holland Falls, located about and 1 ½ hours from Missoula and only 30 minutes northwest of Seeley Lake. The Lake encompasses about 400 acres at an elevation of 4,200 feet with beautiful views of the Swan Mountain Range. Holland Lake offers almost all water sport activities including water skiing, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboards, and fishing.

The area contains various National Forest campground options including RV access. The lesser known Owl Creek camping area offers a nearby campsite option when Holland Lake campsites are sold out during busy summer months. But for those that aren’t into camping, the Holland Lake Lodge offers 6 cabins and 9 rooms to accommodate visitors. Don’t let the Montana rustic lakeside resort description fool you, the lodge dining experience is world-class with an impeccable wine list.

But the highlight for all visitors, whether its day trippers, campers, or lodge occupants, is a hike to Holland Falls. Starting at the end of the access road, the trail roughly follows the lake shoreline and after 1.6 miles and 750 feet of elevation gain, you can reach the falls. Depending on the time of year, it can provide a majestic experience of water spray, noise, and incredible sights. Climbing among the rocks can be slippery so keep an eye on the young hikers. The stunning views of Holland Lake and the Swan Mountain Range will be memorable.

The return hike seems short but rewarding and relaxing, especially for the kids that spent too much time in the waterfall spray and are soaking wet. They know a warm campfire and smores aren’t too far away.
